The conference "Defying Nature's End: A practical agenda for saving life on the planet" and took place 22-26 August 2000 at the California Institute of Technology, hosted by the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science (CABS) at Conservation International, in collaboration with The World Conservation Union (IUCN).

Conference site

The conference was held at the California Institute of Technology. Founded in 1891, Caltech is located on a 124-acre campus in Pasadena. The Institute also manages the nearby Jet Propulsion Laboratory and operates six other off-campus astronomical, seismological, and marine biology facilities. Caltech has an enrollment of some 1,800 students, more than half of whom are in graduate studies, and a faculty of about 280 professorial members and nearly 500 research members. In September, 1999 Caltech was ranked number one in U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges" issue.

Over the years, 26 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to faculty members and alumni, and two faculty members have been awarded the Craford Prize. Forty-three Caltech faculty members and alumni have received the National Medal of Science, and eight alumni (two of whom are also trustees), two additional trustees, and one faculty member have won the National Medal of Technology. Since 1958, 13 faculty members have received the annual California Scientist of the Year award. On the Caltech faculty there are 75 fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and on the faculty and Board of Trustees, 68 members of the National Academy of Sciences and 43 members of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

Caltech has more than 19,000 alumni and its Alumni Association includes 13 active chapters throughout the US and Hong Kong. A 1977-86 study of private-university baccalaureate degree recipients found that 33% of Caltech graduates went on to earn doctorates. This study ranked Caltech No. 1 in Ph D.s earned per capita -- ahead of its nearest rivals, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (19%), and the University of Chicago (17%).
